Lindenhurst is a village in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 2,611 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. Lindenhurst was platted in 1851 by Nicholas Lindenthal and other investors from New York City. The Village of Lindenhurst was formed on July 1, 1860 from a portion of the Township of Plainfield. On October 15, 1865, the Township of Plainfield split into two parts: Lindenhurst became one part of the new township while West Plainfield became another part. On November 3, 1875, the village annexed portions of four townships: Cook (including Oak Lawn), Indiana; Round Lake Beach (including Orland Park and Mundelein), Illinois; and Romeoville (excluding parts of Cicero and Arlington Heights). Lindenhurst's original name was "Hastings". A post office called Hastings opened in 1852, and remained open until it was discontinued in 1907. The current name for Lindenhurst came about because some early settlers were Dutchmen who named their farm "Hastings" after their home country. Lindenhurst started to grow rapidly after incorporation as a village on December 15th 1912 with 469 residents living in 137 buildings or an average density of . One reason for this growth may have been that there had been no transportation available to reach most residents outside of town so they had to rely on local businesses which also grew quickly due to cheap land prices within easy walking distance from all residents. In 1916 when Lindenhhurst got its own fire department it boasted 100 firefighters which increased to 150 by 1930 despite being very small compared to larger villages like Evanston or Chicago Heights that went through similar growth rates without having their own departments! By 1935-1936 when Lindenhust had outgrown its municipal limits it petitioned for annexation by neighboring municipalities including North Aurora which granted it but only if Hamburgh could maintain a military detachment within its borders as well as provide services such as Streets Department etc.. Lindenhurst was a village in Cook County, Illinois, United States. It was founded in 1855 by Amasa Walker and others as a stop on the Underground Railroad. The population of Lindenhurst declined rapidly after the American Civil War, but it grew to over 1,000 by 1860. In 1865, Lindenhurst became the capital of Illinois; since its establishment it has been the only capital in the state. Lindenhurst is named for Charles Linden (1796-1868), an Englishman who had settled in what is now suburban Chicago in 1824. Lindenhurst was first known as "Hollow Brook", and its post office operated from 1841 to 1861. The first settler at Hollow Brook was Isaac Dunham (1792-1865). In 1838, John Haines moved from Liverpool, England to what is now Elmhurst and started trading with Indians at what is now Main Street. He married Sarah Childers (1801-1868) on December 5th of that year at their home on Maple Grove Road near present day First Baptist Church in Elmhurst. When he died suddenly two years later his widow married Nicholas Rowe (1800-1860) and they continued trading there until 1800 when Sarah gave up her trade to raise her family alone; they then moved downriver to where his father still lived onStateline Creek until he took over those businesses about 1850 according to one source The Village of Lindenhurst was organized February 15th 1861 under the name "Village of Elmhurst". On May 12th 1863 an Act was passed providing for new villages within Cook County which were proposed by Commissioners George Fenton and James Prentice In 1865 both towns merged into one municipality called "Lindenhurst" under Township Trustee John Saucier The Village lost its charter due to lack of residents in 1870 so reorganized as a town again with assets including: 7 stores, 2 hotels & 3 grain elevators On October 10th 1889 election trusteeship reverted back to township form after 5 years
Lindenhurst was founded in 1824 by Rev. George Washington Lindenhurst and his wife, Sarah. The town was named for the small village of Lindenhurst in upstate New York. In 1832, the first post office was established in Lindenhurst. The population of Lindenhurst grew steadily until it reached its peak in 1860 with over 200 residents. However, the growth of industry and transportation led to a decrease in population and businesses throughout the area during the late 19th century. By 1920, only a few elderly residents remained in town and most businesses had closed or moved away. The community declined further during the early 21st century as it slowly lost its significance as a commercial center due to new developments along Interstate 95.
