The community was named for Johannes Lindenthal (1759-1841), a German immigrant who served as captain of a wagon train from Königsberg to Chicago and then as sheriff of Cook County. In 1852, $5,000 was raised to buy 1,500 acres (600 hectares) of land directly across the river from where Lindenhurst now stands for a new town called "Lindenhurst". On July 12, 1854, the first meeting of what would become the village took place at what is now the old Agricultural Society building on Center Street. The name "Lindenhurst" originated with Augustus Bedingfield (1800-1868), an Englishman who had come to America in 1824 and purchased 640 acres (240 hectares) near present day Lindenhhurst Village. According to legend, when he learned that his Americanized wife had given birth to two boys in England without informing him he set out one morning after breakfast dressed like a pirate and hijacked two British merchant vessels while they were sailing downriverescaping capture by them! Upon his return home he discovered that his wife's secret had been revealed and she renounced her English citizenship so they could live together under one Roof! In 1870 David Ives built a sawmill on streambed just east of present day village limits; this mill continued until 1940 when it closed due to lack of demand for lumber during World War II. A post office operated atLindenhurst from December 24th 1860 until May 3rd 1865; however it was moved to Aurora November 30th 1865 because Aurora became part of Chicago October 15th 1865 It should be noted that there are no extant buildings dating back to 1850 or 1860 within modern-day Lindenhurst Village which likely supports this claim as few people lived there prior thereto In 1902 Orval Faubus became governor of Illinois after being elected president in 1904 and later serving four terms As Governor; Faubus' political career ended with his impeachment trial following Operation Hardscrabble which began on April 14th 1906 Faubus' defeat led to increased regulationism among some business owners throughout Illinois making it difficult for small businesses especially those not based outside urban areas during this time period . This increase in regulationism can be partially attributed Back then most businessmen did not have any type cf technology or marketing capabilities so their only option other than monopoly
