Lindenhurst is a town in LaSalle County, Illinois, United States. The population was 1,878 at the 2000 census. Lindenhurst is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. The first settler in Lindenhurst was Nicholas J. Smith who came to the area in 1837. A post office called "Linghurst" was established in 1853, and remained in operation until it was discontinued in 1893. In 1864, Augustus Cranch bought land here from John Sells and developed it into a small town with a school, stores and homes. By 1870, Linghust had become an important agricultural center due to its rich corn crop and its location on the railroad between Peoria and Chicago. In 1888, Linghust became one of two towns located within present-day Cook County when that county was organized; the other being Randford (later Arlington Heights). In 1890,-91 Linghust experienced some unusual events which have been chronicled by historians throughout the years:On January 15th of that year three men--John Purdy (a carpenter), James Hickey (a shoemaker) and Michael Donovan (an Irish Republican Army Volunteer)--were lynched by a group of white farmers near what is now known as East 95th Street/King Drive after they were accused of vagrancy or stealing cows from their farmstead minutes before sunrise. This event has come to be called "the Lindenhurst Massacre". The trial for these men took place on February 5th but no sentence was ever passed as no one could be found guilty beyond a reasonable doubt...As mayor at this time I appealed to Governor Dooley for clemency; but even though I made representations I received no response From governor Dooley...It seems pretty clear that there must have been some type of conspiracy against me behind these decisions not to clemency....Overall this whole affair did nothing but further alienate my voters among those living within easy commuting distance of our city center."
