The township was organized in 1838 as a result of a land deal between John Pritzker and George Herron. In 1850, it became one of the original townships in Cook County. The first settler in Lindenhurst was German immigrant Jacob Kappenberg, who purchased two lots in 1849 for $3 each. Lindenhurst's name comes from two Dutch words: "Linden" meaning "forest" and "hurt" meaning "to injure". At first there were no trees around here so people gathered logs to build their homes out of. The first post office opened in 1847 with Josephine Hutton serving as the inaugural Postmaster General. This office moved to its current location within present day Lindenhurst shortly after that year's incorporation into Cook County. The first permanent settler in Lindenhurst was Nicholas J. Biddle who founded a cabin on land he purchased from John Jacob Astor in 1836. From this base, Biddle and his heirs developed what is now Lindenhurst into an agricultural community with a booming economy due to its fertile soil and access to water resources. The town's name comes from two German words: "Linder" meaning "a stream", and "Hurst" meaning "farmstead". Linderburgh (now part of Cicero) served as the original courthouse for much of the early years of Lindenhurst's existence. One such early resident was George Stephenson who operated a steamboat service between Chicago and Rockford during the mid-19th century. In 1857, Stephenson donated land east of present day Lindenhurst to establish Griggs Institute which would become one of Illinois' leading universities. The institution continues to thrive today with more than 3500 students enrolled in its constituent faculties including arts, humanities, sciences and engineering programs across seven campuses throughout Illinois and Missouri. During World War II many members of the local military had their homes or businesses within walking distance of where they were stationed; many residents also worked at nearby munitions plants or factories during those wartime years. When war ended 1945 most residents returned home but a few chose to remain in Lindenhhurst through various business ventures or investments that grew out of their ties to the community over time - some examples include Rheem Glass Company (founded by Edwin Ayer), Pfeiffer Brewing Company (founded by Drs Fred Pfeiffer and Rudolph Fricke), Kaiser Aluminum Company (formed after World War II as Alcoa) - all locally owned businesses that have continued operation until current day!
