When Abraham Lincoln was elected President in 1860 and took office on January 20th of that year, he traveled to Springfield to be sworn into office at Old State Capitol before traveling north to Far Rockaway Township for his inauguration ceremonies aboard HMS "Oscar" off Sandy Hook Point near Long Island Sound with Admiral David Dixon Porter as Chief US Officer aboard USS Constitution ().
