Lindenhurst was founded in 1854 by German settlers and has been home to a Baptist church since 1876. The first settlement in what would become Lindenhurst was made on December 3, 1854 when members of the Amos Pond Company arrived from Germany with five families. In 1865, two more families added to the group and by 1870 there were ten families living in the community. In 1876, Reverend J.H. Smith became pastor of the Baptist church and soon after started construction on a new building which would serve as his parish center for many years to come. The cornerstone for this beautiful structure was laid on November 4th, 1877 and it opened its doors to worshipers on January 5th of that year. The current church building replaced an earlier one which burned down in 1903 during a storm damage incident. Reverend Smith donated land for future development in 1905 and construction began immediately upon completion of that donation just east of where today’s Main Street meets Highway 40 (the original name for Lindenhurst). Over time other churches were built here including larger ones such as First Baptist Church (1913) and Christ Episcopal Cathedral (1969). In 2000-2001 additional renovations were completed to both structures making them then Ready For Use status by the American Institute of Architects! Today Lindenhurst is an active community with plenty of activities going on all throughout each day from farmers markets to arts & crafts shows all through summertime until school returns in September! There are also numerous events held every year like Harvest Festivals/Fairs/Christmas Time affairs etc...
