This parcel lay within what is now known as White's Township and has since been developed into one of the most extensive commercial areas in town with over 30 businesses including several banks and numerous restaurants and stores. A number of professional athletes have called Lindenhurst their home such as football players Lenny Bruce and Joe Namath as well as baseball players Ted Williams and Harmon Killebrew among others; however, none have ever won any major award while living there other than playing professional ball or attending college nearby. Lindenhurst is a small town in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 1,693 at the 2010 census. Lindenhurst is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. It was founded in 1851 as a stop on the then new Western and Eastern Railroad. The railroad's main line crossed through Lindenhurst near present-day Roosevelt Road before being abandoned in 1957. The community first sprang up around two large sawmills that were located along what is now Roosevelt Road. In 1852, the original post office was established at Lindenhurst and it operated until 1878 when it moved to its current location across from Elmwood Cemetery. When the Northwestern Pacific Railroad came through Lindenhurst in 1907, it became one of its stations and the name "Lindenhurst" was applied to both towns together until 1959 when they each seceded from the railroad company.
