When they reached Illinois they found only one other living human being – an Indian trader named John Moorcock – near what would become Rockville Centre and taverns such as the Tabor House soon appeared along with small steamboats capable of landing passengers on Lake Michigan for transportation to points north (the first steamship service between Chicago and Detroit Lakes commenced on July 4th,1849). These early days are documented by local pioneers such as James Caird who penned an account entitled "A Pioneer History of Rockville Centre" which still remains available online at lindehurstvillagehistorycom . On October 17th 1870 Nathan Sheehan married Anna Maria Kapp - both natives of Ireland - at the home of his father-in-law Michael Maher located just off Main Street opposite Lockwood's grocery store (now known as Sheehan's Liquor Store), becoming Swedenborgian Catholics under laicization seven years later on May 3rd 1875 when Pope Leo XIII issued his bull "Rerum Novarum". A few years later Fraternal Order Of Odd Fellows No 2 donated land adjacent to present day Springbrook Road for religious use while others erected grills ahead of time near where Weisman Elementary now stands southeast corner First St., where Mechanics Hall once stood before being destroyed by fire during World War II; these earliest beginnings can be seen today as remnantsMr & Mrs Kapp built her conventual style brick building back then opposite Schoolhouse No 1 next door now used for storage featuring original greenstone arches-an excellent exampleof Romanesque Revival architecture dating back to this period
In 1831, the Lindenhurst post office was established in what is now Lindenhurst, Illinois. The population of Lindenhurst then was only five people. In 1835, the first school in what is now Lindenhurst was built. It was called "The Academy". In 1837, a mill was constructed on the north side of town by John Fenton and his son-in-law George Ladd. By 1840, there were ten residents living in Lindenhurst. In 1847, a new courthouse and jail were constructed in what is nowLindenhurst. The first justice of the peace for Lindenhurst was Amos Cook. From 1850 to 1865, it was part of Gentry County. In 1861, when Lincoln became president and took office over Kentucky, he appointed James Kapp as the first county judge for Gentry County. Kapp served until 1870 when he resigned due to illness. During World War I (1914-18), Lindenhurst served as an Army training camp from 1915 to 1918. After the war ended in 1919, it reverted back to its original status as a village with five people living there; however it continued to be known as "Lindenhurt" until 1939 when it changed its name back to its current spelling of "Lindenhurst."
