Lindenhurst was platted in 1836 by George H. Linde and named for his childhood home of Linsdale, England. It became a village in 1857 and then a town in 1867. The name was changed to Lindenhurst in 1934 after death of its founder, George H. Linde Sr.. The first post office opened at Lindenhurst on November 1, 1858. It was renamed Zumbro Falls on December 5, 1865; Glendale on January 3, 1870; Arlington Heights on November 12, 1872; Cicero on December 10, 1880; Mount Greenwood Village on May 6, 1890; and Northbrook on October 15th 1896 before it closed for good January 7th 1897 due to lack of mail volume from the new community that had been established nearby called Northbrook Park which had been platted just months earlier and had become a suburb of Chicago while Lindenhrust continued to be the main commercial center with several banks,. In 1907 Sleepy Hollow Brewing Company opened up shop in what is now the old Post Office building across from where I-80 exits off exit 4A (then known as I-94). That same year General Motors started manufacturing their Buick models there under license from German carmaker Benz AG beginning production October 1908 as GMC automobiles were only available as pre-owned vehicles bought secondhand at local stores such as Jiffy's Store or Sears Roebuck & Co., Ltd., until 1936 when they took over production themselves starting with their first mass-produced model – the Cadillac Series 8 Convertible – produced March 9th 1936 through September 1939 at their plant located adjacent to current day Soldier Field Stadiums north side near Wacker Drive/south side between State Street/northwest corner of Lake Shore Drive/west end of Michigan Avenue all this during an era when most U.S domestic automotive production occurred outside Detroit with Flint being the primary center for assembly because GMC did not have a manufacturing line inside city limits until 1924 when they built their first iconic red Chevrolet factory building next door to what is now University Plaza shopping mall south side between Randolph Road/northwest corner Lake Shore Drive/east end Michigan Avenue also known today as Old Ford Motor Works facility) . From there until 1953 alle virtually every other major American automaker manufactured cars here including Chrysler Corporation (1925), Ford Motor Company (1926), Buick Motor Company (1927), General Motors Corporation (1928) Packard Motor Carriers Incorporated (1920s-1950s) along with many smaller companies like Mercury Marine Lines Incorporated who operated out of two warehouses700 N Dearborn Street South west of downtown later moved east within city limits into new owner Artis Management Group’s former Sunnyside Yards development which anchored Lincoln Park Ridge district east side between Indiana Avenue./later relocated back into downtown property once again currently used by Northwestern Mutual Insurance company since 1995/. After World War II ended there wasn't much demand for cars anymore so GMC dismantled their BUICK plants but kept all their tooling and turned it into buses that continues production still going today!
