In 1865, the Union army's first general, Ulysses S. Grant, was given command of the Illinois National Guard. He ordered his unit to march on Springfield, Missouri. Soon after arriving in Springfield, Grant learned that there were too many Confederate soldiers living in the city. To keep these soldiers from joining the Confederacy and becoming allies of the South, Grant ordered his unit to march northward and into central Illinois. This action set off a months-long military campaign known as the "Bloody Sunday" Massacre.
