The village was incorporated as a town in 1871 and became an unincorporated community after it was abolished as a municipality in 1924. The Village had 1,752 residents at the 2010 census According to city officials, Lincolnwood has been cited for crime rates that are above average for Chicagoland neighborhoods. The town is named after Abraham Lincoln and was founded in 1859 by pioneer John P. Fuller. Lincolnwood developed around a farmers’ market and schoolhouse that functioned until 1865 when the city of Chicago took over operation of those institutions. The market continued to be open until 1959 when it closed for lack of customers. In 1870, the first post office was established in Lincolnwood; it served only residents of the town itself. Lincolnwood initially consisted solely of log cabins used as farmhouses and village halls were not built until after World War II. The main economic activity during pre-war years was agriculture with cattle ranching also being a majorstay through the early 20th century; however, this changed after World War I when machine production became more prevalent in America and meatpacking started becoming an important industry in Illinois; Lincolnwood accordingly experienced rapid growth during this time period including numerous new housing developments which sprung up throughout its rural setting due to burgeoning demand for workforcehousing withinChicago’s expanding metropolis (Fowler). This dramatic change began to take hold in local municipalities as well with many small towns across Cook County rapidly adopting similar development patterns as Lincolnwood did during this era (Shepard).
