He was also an unsuccessful candidate for the U.S. Senate in 1860 and 1864 but ran on a platform of free labor and local self-reliance. Martha Lincoln died in 1870 but her husband continued to live at their home until his death in 1865. The Lincols left behind a largehomeowningand farming community that continues to grow today."
Lincolnwood was once a small farming community in the Illinois River Valley. The community was founded in 1848 by Hardin Lincoln and his wife, Nancy. The Lincolns were pioneers who made an impact on the area by developing a farm system that included raising cattle, horses, and pigs. Their land extended from what is now Elmhurst Avenue in the north to Cicero Avenue in the south and they also developed a store and school in the community. In 1865, Hardin Lincoln died at the age of 86 years after setting out to find new land for his family. His wife continued to operate their farm until her death in 1929. She is buried at Arlington Cemetery with her husband.
