Two years later he was elected Vice President on John Quincy Adams's ticket; however, upon Adams's death two months later Lincoln lost his seat in Congress due to term limits set by Congress at that time. In 1850 Lincoln ran for president again but lost to Douglas on November 6th despite having more electoral votes than Douglas. This campaign marked the first time that African Americans had ever participated actively in American politics and it created tension within society over what role they should play therein: should they beseen as equals or second class citizens? Lincoln would eventually win reelection four times (1856–60; 64–68; 72–76) before becoming president himself on April 12th 1865 after Douglas' assassination attempt failed during a speech at Ford’s Theatre). During his presidency, Lincolns efforts focused on creating jobs through government policies such as tariffs and banking reform while balancing budgets using fiscal policy techniques like spending cuts etc.; these programs ultimately led to increased economic growth throughout America during his tenure which helped sustain peace during Reconstruction Era following Civil War
