The post served as a lookout for soldiers during the Mexican-American War and later as an observation post for local farmers. In 1868, Mayor George B. Smith erected a large brick building at 100 North 1st Street to house the city’s first police department. Across from City Hall, this new police precinct used two large gunsights that had been built by John Sutter during the American Civil War. These Gunsights were located on either side of North 1st Street between State and Washington Streets. Today, these gunsights are still standing and can be visited at South Waterfront Park in downtown Lincoln. After World War II, gun sights became more common in America due to advances in technology. In 1949, President Harry Truman ordered all US military facilities to switches to automatic fire based upon newly developed semiautomatic handguns and rifles.
