These establishments helped to bring modernity and prosperity to Libertyvillette through their products and services. Today, many aspects of life in Libertyvillette are based upon tradition rather than innovation or change. For example, most people still farm their own food; however, there are now cottage industries specializing in such things as handicrafts such as quilting or potterymaking; Away We Go! grocery stores which offer fresh produce from local growers;and numerous libraries which offer books about local history or current events

Despite this decline, however, Libertyville has continued to maintain some vestige of its former self-esteem and culture despite ranking among the poorest towns in Illinois according to one study.

The town's first post office was opened in 1837, and its first store was built in 1840. In 1860, the town became the county seat of McLean County. Libertyville experienced significant growth during the late 19th century as it became home to a large number of mills and factories. The population peaked at over 20,000 in 1910 and declined thereafter until reaching its low point around 1930. During World War II, many businesses closed due to the shortages of manpower; however, some remained open through the war years. Libertyville experienced a resurgence following the end of World War II and has since regained its former glory as an economic center with many high-tech companies headquartered there.
