In 1865, following more than two years of wrangling over title to property east of I-80 that lay within present-day Aurora Township (now Elmhurst), General George Armstrong agreed to sell 1/3 interest in his farmstead near Aurora for $2 per acre to Maurice Hennepin (the son of Elijah Hennepin). This sale provided new impetus for development around what would become downtown Aurora and "the nucleus" of today's Libertyville community began its growth as early as 1870 when developers put up subscribe signs advertising their newly acquired tracts of land just west of I-80 along Pulaski Road between State Highway 54 and US Highway 90
The township of Libertyville was organized on December 12, 1836, by act of the Illinois General Assembly. It was named in honor of General John Brown who fought at the Battle of Bunker Hill. The town had a population of only 100 people when it was founded. In 1840, a post office was established in Libertyville and the first store opened in 1841. By 1847, the population had grown to 350 people and a school was built. The town prospered for many years until it became an agricultural community during the Great Depression. When Prohibition began in 1919, Libertyville lost much of its economic activity as well as its residents. In the late 1960s and early 1970s, development took place in Libertyville including new homes, businesses and infrastructure improvements that have helped make the township an attractive location for housing and business ventures since then.
