Libertyville is a small town in McHenry County, Illinois, United States. The population was 1,824 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. The first settler in what is now Libertyville was Levi Holland in 1818. He and his family were met with hostility from the Native Americans, so they moved away and began to farm their land on the east side of the river near present day Blackhawk Road. In 1834 Holland donated land to build a school and church. The first teacher was named Daniel Webster who taught there for one year before moving to Harper's Ferry, Virginia. In 1835 John Prentice built a log cabin on property that became home to Libertyville School District No. 2 which he formed with other settlers around this time including Aaron Burr (a signer of the Declaration of Independence). Burr served as Superintendent from 1836-1839 and also donated land for a courthouse which was completed in 1840. In 1851 Prentice sold his rights to what is now Elmhurst High School to trustees who organized it into an elementary school district known as District #2 which included Libertyville Schools until 1906 when it reorganized into McHenry County Schools uniting all schools within its boundaries plus those located in other districts across county lines resulting in increased enrollment for both high schools combined as well as Libertyville Elementary School where grades one through four are still offered today along with free lunch for students during regular school hours while residing within District 2 boundaries only; thus creating what we know today as “Libertyville” High School although originally established by Mr. Prentice himself back then just “Libertyville Elementary”! In 1907 when District #2 merged into Cook County Government giving us our current name due mainly to political correctness I believe you could say we have always been called “LibertyVILLE” ever since!
In 1847, the first post office in Libertyville was established. The town was named for General George Washington and his wife, Martha. In 1870, a school was built. In 1878, a railway station was constructed. The pioneer settlers of Libertyville were Levi Coffin, John Crighton, James Salyer and Edwin Wills.
