Libertyville is a small town located in McHenry County, Illinois, United States. The population was 1,868 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. The town was founded in 1857 by Levi Lincoln and John Gorman as a farmstead on the east side of the bluffs overlooking the Illinois River. In 1865, Libertyville became one of three towns that formed what would become McHenry County. The other two were Geneva and Whitesboro. In 1892, after some debate over whether to annex nearby Carbondale into Libertyville or keep it as a separate community, the voters decided to join forces with Carbondale and form an all-village government known as Township No. 2 (later renamed Township No. 3). On January 1, 1907, when Brown v Board of Education came down from the U.S. Supreme Court legalizing segregation in public schools across America (the case also helped spur growth in Libertyville), Libertyville's mayoralty changed from agriculture to education and post office services; this change followed similar changes elsewhere in McHenry County during that year due to nationwide trends in school desegregationembering efforts at that time. One result of this change was that many residents who had been living on or near Railroad Avenue since before it was built began moving away because they no longer wanted their homes surrounded by school buildings and playgrounds adjoining them like they had in previous decades when free public education was available within walking distance for almost everybody regardless of income level or background/race/ethnicity (it wasn't until well into the 21st century before integrated schooling became affordable for most people here again)). Libertyville is a small city in McLean County, Illinois, United States. The population was 5,890 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Chicago–Naperville–Rockford Metropolitan Statistical Area. The city was founded on October 12, 1848 by James H. Kautz and his wife Anna Maria Kautz as a small town named Libertyville Township. On November 26, 1853, the township was renamed after John Adams and it became a city on December 3, 1865. The first settler in Libertyville was James H. Kautz who arrived in 1848 from Germany with his family. In 1850 he married Anna Maria Kautz and they started to build a home on what is now Davis Street in Libertyville Township which they named "Kaufman House". They had six children: two daughters and four sons. In 1855 they moved to what is now the intersection of Michigan Avenue and Maple Road in Rockford Township where they founded the first business - an groceries store called G&G Grocery Store & Mercantile Company Ltd.. This store served as their base until 1860 when they moved to what is now Elmwood Avenue which served as their permanent home for many years before moving to their current location on October 12th1848 which gave them their name of "LibertyVILLE". In 1861 they built the first school house in Libertyville - Mr George Wickenheiser's School #2 which later became known as Harper Elementary School (now Harper Jr./Sr High School). From 1865-1868 there were three schools although one was destroyed by fire; Mrs Howard Janssen's Intermediate School #3 (now Mrs John Avant's Middle School), and Dr John Smedley's Kindergarten (now Mr Abdullah Saleh Middle/High School). In 1870-1872 there were only two schools but this changed when Dr John Smedley started teaching addition classes at Harper Elementary then decided to open his own high school on May 1st that year called "John Smedley High School" which would later become known as Northwestern Illinois University-Chicago Campus
Libertyville was founded in 1849 by John L. Stevenson and his family. It was named for the Liberty of the United States, which is a reference to the Declaration of Independence and the Constitution. The town grew quickly, and by 1870 it had over 1,000 residents. In 1876, Libertyville became part of the new City of Chicago.
