Libertyville is a town in Whiteside County, Illinois, United States. The population was 3,878 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. The first settler in what is now Libertyville was John Nicholson who arrived in 1812. He and his family were the first white people to purchase land in Whiteside County. Nicholson built a log cabin on what is now Main Street. The first store opened here in 1815 named "Nicholson's Store". In 1819, John Haney founded the Haney Manufacturing Company which became one of the largest textile companies in America and produced clothing for many American presidents including Ulysses S. Grant and Abraham Lincoln. In 1825, Isaac Ivers purchased 640 acres (2 km²) of land southwest of present-day Libertyville from Nicholas Nicholson for $5 per acre ($/ha). Ivers built two large frame homes on this property which are still standing today: The Ivers Mansion and The Masonic Lodge House (now known as Goodman Hall). One of the earliest businesses here was J & P Emporium which opened on December 8, 1830 by Joshua Pease & Joel Pollock (). In 1835, James Kline bought 400 acres (16 km²) northeast of present-day Libertyville from Isaac Ivers for $10 per acre ($/ha). Kline established Kline's Mills here which manufactured flour, soap and other products until it closed down in 1957. The first post office in Libertyville was called White Sands Station after White Sands Creek where it operated from 1837 to 1860 (). It reopened as Blue Ridge Post Office on November 1st 1861 under license from Washington Territory government (). This post office served 444 residents before it closed its doors again on December 15th 1865 due to lack ofsupport from population growth within Township limits (). On February 10th 1870; a group led by Zenas Grosse formed a company with three principals named Grosse’s mills and Trading Post near current day Washington Park Road (), along with five others to start an express stage line between Chicago and Rockford () via Burlington Junction (). This venture failed due to low ridership rates but Grosse continued working on various transportation projects throughout his life until his death at age 86 years old . From January 24th 1890 through July 14th 1890; Indiana Territory government granted a charter to rename “Elkhart Lake” into “Libertyville” after several petitions received by then President Grover Cleveland (); this name change eventually came into effect effective September 1st 1888 when all incorporated towns within Indiana Territory were given their own names . On October 7th 1905; Illinois State government created another township located east of modern day Libertyville (@ 6 miles long), named McDonough Township after General James McDonough who had been governor during much of early 20th century while also serving as commander-in-chief US Army Northwest District () prior to becoming Governor at the time thanks largely to Then Congressman Samuel Wickersham ! However McDonough Township never gained significant population or development unlike neighboringlibertyvillians such as Mayor Richard Makiem who has resided there continuously since 1955! Despite these numerous setbacks over time; many businesses have continued to thrive thanks largely to entrepreneurship within local community members like Mayor Richard Makiem who has resided there continuously since 1955!
