Libertyville, Illinois was founded in 1847 by the Volstead Act of that year. The town was named after Liberty Hall, a meeting place for legislators and settlers who were fleeing the American Revolution. The first settler in Libertyville was John A. Ritchie, who purchased land from the local Indian tribe in 1848. In 1870, Samuel Morse established a blacksmith shop here and started making electric telegraph wires out of cottonwood trees. In 1886, when George Stephenson built the first steam engine in England, he used his carriages to transport passengers and goods from London to Manchester through Freedom Trail runners on Highway 10 near Libertyville. Libertyville grew rapidly during the late 19th century as manufacturing interests moved into the area, with businesses such as Armoury Mutual Fire Insurance Company (founded 1892), Singer Sewing Machine Company (founded 1893), and Bendix Engine & Machine Works (founded 1897) taking hold. However, by 1930 only a few small businesses remained in town; most of the industry had shifted to larger cities during this time. During World War II, Libertyville became an important Army training ground for local soldiers; facilities such as Camp Noonday and Camp Kilmer were constructed here. However, due to wartime restrictions on housing development in central Illinois, many family-owned businesses closed down during the war years. After the war ended, many new businesses opened up in town but job opportunities remained limited despite growth during earlier decades; however, some new restaurants have since opened up around town including Parma's Pizza Place (founded 1945), Cypress Grille (founded 1947), and J&J's Hamburgers & Steakhouse (established 1959). Today much of downtown is still home to old industrial buildings while commercial areas are now filled with large box stores and fast food chains like McDonalds and Wendy's. Despite problems faced by many businesses after World War II, Libertyville has experienced periods of prosperity throughout its history; in 1957 it became one of fifty towns located within General Motors’gm Research Park investment zone located near Flint Hills outside Chicago – one of GM’s largest research centers at that time – which helped spur new economic development throughout central Illinois over subsequent decades. Despite recent struggles related to population growth rates among other nearby communities experiencing similar levels of rapid growth thanks to suburban sprawl policies across America,[1] [2] [3] recent efforts by local officials to revive downtown have seen mixed results: although some improvements have been made such as adding more parking spaces or renovating older buildings,[4][5] overall downtown remains largely unchanged from its heyday several decades ago despite neighborhood demands for more vibrant public spaces.[6][7][8]

In 1836, Libertyville became a city under the leadership of Mayor James H. Thompson. The city experienced rapid growth during its early years, and it soon become one of the largest in Illinois. In 1845, Libertyville annexed the neighboring village of Arlington Heights to form a single municipality. In 1956, Libertyville merged with nearby Rome to form the current township of Rome-Libertyville.
