A store was opened on the corner of Elm and Washington Streets in 1839, and soon became a popular destination for customers looking to buy rifles, shotguns and pistols. The store grew until it occupied a entire block on State Street. In 1861, the store moved to its current location on Main Street, which remain as its original home until it closed in 1966. The first handguns were imported into Libertyville from Kentucky in 1838. By 1840, there were several stores selling guns in town. On October 15th of that year, the first gun battle between Native Americans and white settlers took place at Mill Creek (now Elmwood Park). The natives were killed by United States Marines who stormed the scene during the Battle of Mill Creek. In 1847, a new shooting range was built near town by Yvette Davenport (later Mrs. Abraham Lincoln). This range continued to be used until 1962 when it was converted into an elementary school playgroundnasium. In 1850-1854, two stores operated side-by-side on High Street: John Stephenson’s Store & Pistol Emporium and Henry Wickersham’s Sporting Goods Shop & Gun Emporium. These two businesses shared one door from 1854-1857; however this door has been preserved as part of the building now housing Smith’s Camera across the street from ASICS shoes department

Most notably though are two churches that dominate Independence Mall: First Presbyterian Church west of Main Street and Stroud Methodist Episcopal Church east across State Street from McCormick Place Shopping Center. Other attractions include three golf courses - Mount Prospect Country Club northwest of downtown; Ravinia Park northwest of downtown; and Eero Saarinen Waterfall southeast off Northwest Highway in unincorporated Cook County just outside Libertyville village limits
