The townsite was founded in 1871 by five men who bought land from the then-powerful Peabody family. Libertyville has a rich history, including being one of the first places in America to legalize gambling and its role as an important center for education and industry. The first settlers arrived in 1871 and platted what is now Libertyville on March 6, 1872. The name "Liberty" was given to the site because it had been exempted from taxation by James K. Polk during his presidency. A post office called Liberty was established in 1875, and remained open until 1906. In 1902, two brothers - Harry Wessels and John Latham - opened a grocery store at 10 Evers Road (now Homan Avenue). They remain the town's most successful entrepreneurial dynasty to date with over 60 businesses between them throughout their lifetimes. According to the 2010 census, there are 2,921 people living within 1 mile (3 km) of libertyville Elementary School; 594 people living within 5 miles (8 km) of libertyville Middle School; 281 people living within 10 miles (16 km) of libertyville High School; and no residents located further than 15 miles (24 km). Its downtown is home to the Libertyville Common and the Libertyville Mall. The town was founded in 1854 by John Foust and his wife Nancy. The first post office in Libertyville opened on December 22, 1854. In 1861, Libertyville became a station on the Chicago and Western Railroad. In 1865, it became a stop on the Great Northern Railway's Lincoln Highway system. In 1892, Libertyville annexed nearby North Geneva Township to its borders. In 1907, another annexation took place when Indianola Township merged with Libertyville to form North Geneva Township again. In 1935, during World War II, Libertyville joined forces with other towns in Cook County to become one municipality known as "Chicago-Elgin-Lincoln". The Municipal Airport was built within the boundaries of this new municipality and served as its airport until 1984 when it was closed down due to lack of funding and development opportunities for that airport outside of Chicago proper; however, current plans call for reactivating portions of it as a privately owned airport serving Libertyvilians only after Allegheny County completes their plan for expanding Diridon Expressway through that portion of town). This whole process happened behind closed doors because then Mayor Daley felt that he could control how much money went into City Hall from Elgin County which made him very powerful politically at that time (he would later become governor). After many years of planning and discussion between all concerned parties including some members of Congress who were also familiar with what was happening in Elgin County they came up with an agreement which allowed them all but Chatham Village (just northwest of town) to secede from City Hall while retaining city rights themselves so long as they agreed not to apply for or take advantage of any special benefits givento them by Mayor Daley - something that some residents still regret today because now they can't even vote on decisions made about their municipality without getting approval from City Hall which effectively eliminates most voices from having input into these types of decisions!
