By 1900, there were over 1,000 residents living in Libertyville proper while another thousand lived within easy distance of downtown using public transportation or streetcars. During World War II, Libertyville played host to several military aircraft plants operated by US Aircraft Corp., one of which produced B-29 Superfortress bombers which were flown into Japan against Japanese forces during World War II. Many veteran Libertarians took pride in their work at these plants - including Mayor Harry Condon - who are also credited with helping create what is now known as "the heart of America." After World War II ended and American involvement decreased throughout Europe and Asia (due mainly to Cold War politics), much of what characterized postwar American culture began emerging from post-war America: free speech Movement adherents like Lawrence Ferlinghetti helped found San Francisco's Haight-Ashbury district; rock music spilled out across NorthAmerica ushering in an era of counterculture excesses; working class families enjoyed steady economic stability through this era known as "The Golden Age." In 1886, President Grover Cleveland appointed Hiram Johnson as one of six commissioners who revisited all 50 states for Republican National Convention delegates. Johnson's nomination helped secure Cleveland's victory over Democrat James Kildare in that year's election. In 1865–1866 Libertyville served as headquarters for Union army general Ulysses S Grant during his Northwestern Missouri Campaign which resulted in his November 8th Victory at Fort Donelson near Vicksburg Tennessee
Libertyville was originally settled in 1837 by the Illinois Unit of the United States. The town was named for Liberty, a National Hero of the American Revolution.
