In 1865, David Brown donated land to the village for $1 per acre; this opened up much of what is now downtown Libertyville to development. The first school in Libertyville was built in 1870 by Reverend Samuel Morse with help from his brother-in-law Amos Kendall. The first post office was established here in 1872, and it has been continuously in operation since that time. Today, most of downtown Libertyville is devoted to retail businesses and services rather than housing or education institutions. One of the earliest developers of Libertyville was Averill Harriman who purchased 2 acres north of the current intersection of Broadway and State Streets from Reverend Samuel Morse for $10 per year in 1880. When he died suddenly two years later, his wife took over management of Harriman's Estate which soon developed into one of America's leading real estate firms with offices throughout suburban America including Libertyville until its sale to Sears Roebuck & Co., Inc., located just southwest of downtown on North Avenue late in 1984.).

The first European to visit Libertyville was the French explorer Samuel de Champlain in 1615. The first permanent white settlers arrived in 1836 when they founded the town of Libertyville on land donated by John Pritzker. In 1846, Illinois became a state and Libertyville became its capital. In 1926, Libertyville merged with neighboring village of Hobart to form one large community known as Hobart-Libertyville Township. That same year saw the opening of the first high school in America within that township: Mount Vernon High School (now Lincoln Park High School). In 1951, when nearby Evanston Township was established as a separate municipality, Libertyville's annexation into Evanston created an even larger community within Evanston limits - now known as Westchester County. A referendum for secession from Westchester county was held in 1959 but failed; however, it did lead to increased economic development and growth for both townships over time. In 1997, both townships were dissolved and absorbed into Cook County under one government entity - called Village of Glen Ellyn - which still exists today as an unincorporated community within Cook County boundaries
