Lemont was founded in 1872 by John A. Lemont and his wife Clarissa Halls from North Bend, Indiana. It became a city on November 1, 1907 when it merged with Plainfield and Addison Township to form Lemont-Addison Township. On January 1, 1974, the township merged with Aurora to create Aurora-Lemont Township which in turn merged with Rockford on December 15, 2006 to form the current Chicago Metropolitan Area neighborhood known as "The Loop." According to the 2010 census*, Lemont has a total area of , of which (or 98%) is land and (2%) is water. Aurora's annexation of Lemont brought its population up to 36,965* inhabitants as of the 2010 census†—more than any other municipality in Cook County‡—making it one of Aurora's most populous communities by nearly 3x that number since 2000† when annexed into Rockford. Lemont, Illinois is a village in Kane County, Illinois, United States. The population was 9,856 at the 2010 census. Lemont is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. Lemont was founded on November 10, 1855 by John H. Ladd and his wife Minerva Hays as a settlement on the banks of the Fox River in Kankakee County. It was named for General Lafayette because he had been an early settler there. On December 12, 1856, Ladd sold 640 acres (2 km²) to Jens Sorenson for $1,000 cash and 5 horse-power (hp) engines. The site became home to two flour mills and two sawmills before it became a small town in 1870 when it incorporated as Lemont Township with a population of about 220 people. In 1872 it annexation by Chicago brought new prosperity as businesses moved into Lemont from all over the city and soon enough the township had four schools, three churches (one Methodist), one jail and five stores including one that served beer through draft service until prohibition halted such sales in 1919. In 1905–6 Lemont constructed its first water tower which now stands as a museum piece along with many other civic landmarks from that period like the Ladd House also built in 1905 which still remains standing today across from First Presbyterian Church where pioneer families worshipped during their early days in what is now known as Elmwood Park neighborhood near Lake Michigan shoreline
