The first Europeans to explore what is now Lemont territory were French traders who arrived in 1779 A.D.. In 1837, John P. Lemont set out from his home near present-day Lombard Junction to secure land grants for himself and his family within what would become Lemont Township. The township was organized on January 1st, 1847 under Act No., 25th General Assembly of Illinois (1901). Lemont became one of five townships in Cook County when it was established as part of the new county system on February 4th, 1856. At its creation, Lemont consisted of just over 2 square miles (5 km2) with a population of only 100 people; however, by 1860 its population had swollen to 551 residents and it boasted two churches (Anglican/Methodist), eight schools (for children grades K-12), four stores/farms (all related to general merchandise), two blacksmiths shops (one owned by Jno Norvell & Sons), three physicians practicing medicine out of their homes - Drs Augustus Wirtz and Charles Keyesand Drs George Gould - as well as two law firms: Hinshaw & Curtis LLP and Wickersham Law firm . The early years at LemONT were difficult due to economic stagnation caused by shortages brought about by transportation problems along the main line between Chicago and St Louis which shortened during construction due to heavy snowfalls during winter1858-59." In 1862Francesco Mazzini visited America while en route back from Rome He noted "a great many points [in] this country remarkable for their barrenness or almost so; but I have never seen anything more beautiful than thatched roofs surmounted by tall chimneys testifying not onlyto wealth but alsoto some barbarous custom" Hence he named one corner of Cicero Avenue after him." By 1865 there existed only three residences left in town proper while seventy nine businesses men including ten taverns (), six grocery stores (), thirteen hotel rooms () had opened up across all wards (). Consequently most citizens lived either aforementioned properties adjacent thereto or elsewhere within walking distance thereof." In addition state capital moved from Quincy IL into Ogden UT effective June 30th 1863 following Loyalties Rebellion where Gov Abraham Lincoln decided against returning US soil to proslavery states
