It is part of the Chicago Metropolitan area. The first settlers in Lemont were farmers who came from New York and Vermont. They built a cabin on the east side of the Platte River near what is now Elmhurst Road. In 1837, they bought land north of the river and started to build a house. In 1839, they became residents of Lemont Township. In 1841, Captain John Ayer established a ferry service across the Platte River to connect Lemont with Aurora (now Peoria). This service provided transportation for goods and people between Aurora and Lemont. Lemont had its first school in 1845 by Mrs. Nancy Rodgers-Stevens. The first teacher was Dan Whitehead who taught until 1861 when he moved to Decatur, Illinois to become superintendent of public instruction there. In 1870, Samuel Silliman became president of First National Bank which opened up new businesses in town such as groceries, hardware stores, vegetable gardens, flour mills etc.. He also raised money for various local charities including one which gave free educations to poor children for one year beginning in 1872%. He helped promotelime growth among other things by providing capital for early industrialization projects like those built at Kankakee Falls and Macomb Mills . After his death in 1895 his son Samuel Silliman Jr., became president until 1921 when he died at age 86 years old . during his father’s lifetime many industries were established here like poultry processing plants that produced millions of eggs each year before deregulation caused prices to drop; several engineering firms ; Waukegan Cheese factory; P]latform Printing Presses (); LEMONT CABLE COMPANY (later TVA) plant where aluminum wire was recycled into televisions

The town was founded in 1879 by John Leland and his family. The first post office was established in 1881. Lemont became a city in 1972, when it merged with neighboring Addison to form the current municipality of Lemont-Addison. Lemont’s name comes from two early residents: George Lemont and Solomon Leverett were both natives of Worcester County, Massachusetts and each donated land to start a village on the west side of Chicago for African Americans. Lemont became the capital of Kane County on October 15th, 1879 by act of the General Assembly; its first mayor was James Prentice (1841–1910). A new courthouse building and jail were erected soon after on what is now First Street near its junction with Washington Avenue (now Elmhurst Avenue). It had an estimated population of 100 people when it incorporated as a city but only 7 families lived there due to fires that destroyed most of their homes in 1886-1887 which also caused much damage to downtown business enterprises like the printing works belonging to Jules & Augustus Loeb where they printed newspapers then known all over North America After years full time firefighting efforts by volunteer firefighters through out Kane County including many recall interviews done with old timers we have now developed back up water pumps just in case any Village ever does come back online again LOL
