Lemont, Illinois is a small town located in the southern portion of the U.S. state of Illinois. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area and has a population of over 103,000 residents as of 2010. The city was named after Lemont, a village in New York State which was founded by French traders in 1790. In 1871, Lemont became one of the first townships in Cook County to be organized and it remained an unincorporated community until its incorporation into Lemont Township on December 1, 1881. On November 3, 1907, Lemont became one of 53 communities that joined together as the City of Chicago pursuant to Act No. 9094 (Chapter 527), known as the Chicago Municipal Code Amendment Act (1907). On May 15, 1912 – less than two weeks after Mayor John Puskar’s proclamation designating Chicagoland as a “gun-free zone” – Mayor Emanuel issued an ordinance making all citizens required to carry permits for handguns within city limits. The ordinance remains in effect today and requires handgun owners to present their permits when they wish to possess or display any firearms within City limits. These projectile tips were then launched at high speeds towards troops situated close enough so that they could hear and see them coming before they could fire back! That same year saw another milestone for the city when it received its water supply from Lake Michigan via pipeline making it one of only two American cities that had such infrastructure at that time . During World War II many residents turned their homes into "battlefront" housing filling up areas like Sheffield that are now east of I-90 near Metra trainspotting area . After 1945 much growth came to Lemont with several new high schools opening along with many small businesses moving into what is today downtown Lemount including restaurants/bars/cafés etc., giving rise to what is now known as "Downtown LemONT." Today Downtown Lamont remains one of the most vibrant neighborhoods in town with lots of cultural events going on throughout the year
