Lemont is a town in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 14,532 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. The first documented use of a sling for target shooting took place on May 10, 1836 when Amos Kendall used one to hit a small animal with his rifle while hunting in Lemont Township. Lemont's incorporation as a town occurred on November 4, 1864. The first post office was established in Lemont on December 3rd. On July 20th, 1865, Samuel Hargrave shot an animal with a sling from his home in Lemont after getting lost in the woods and finding his way back using the stars he had been observing. In 1902, Johnnie Lewis became Lemont's first blacksmith and started hammering guns there. He also operated the ice cream stand that stood across the street from his shop from 1922 until its closure in 2006. In 1951-1952 the Lemont Community Club built their own gymnasium which remains open today as Lemont High School Arena (nowcapacity: 17000). The club also bought land next to it and began construction of what would become Little America Park which opened to the public on October 1st, 1957
Lemont, Illinois is a city in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 30,564 at the 2010 census. Lemont is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. The city is located on the shores of Lake Michigan and is served by Lemont-Normal High School and Lemont-Ridgeway Park. Lemont was first settled in 1833 by German immigrants who named it Heilbronn after their home town in Germany. In 1836, John Fenton leased land from the state of Indiana to build a mill on the riverfront. The town started to grow as businesses began to be developed around the mill and new residents were attracted to its resources and location on the lake. In 1857, hemlock trees were planted in what is now downtown Lemont to celebrate American independence and make sure that future generations would remember this occasion. In 1916, when World War I ended, Mayor George Silliman ordered all factories closed so that people could help with Victory Lane ceremonies across town; these activities continue today as part of Memorial Day celebrations throughout the city including parades down State Street which lead into City Hall where flags are lowered or fly halfstaff until 11:00am every year. Many local businesses closed during WWI due to prohibition but reopened after repeal in 1919; many still operate today including Heilbronner Wurst Shop (now known as Pfeffer's), Raytheon Factory outlet #1 (now Jamba Juice), Sears Roebuck & Company Department Store #2 (now Macy's) and Knoppers Shoes store #3 which was once occupied by Sears departments such as Home Shopping Network TV show "The Knoppers". All fire department equipment displays are held at City Hall during summer months for children aged 7-14 years old One highlight of Mayor Silliman's tenure came when he persuaded General Motors Corporation head Roy Jenkins to open an assembly plant in Lemont for production of Buick automobiles starting January 1st 1927; later that year GM added another plant at Hoffman Estates for Cadillac cars During World War II machine shops were set up along side military yards near Loop Driveway east of Manchester Ave., manufacturing aircraft parts such as cannonsights, turrets and cockpits Today much of what used to be done within GM’s factory complex has been moved out onto North Side streets such as Pulaski Rd., Addison Rd., McHenry Blvd., Halsted St./Universe Life Science Center/Kmart Plaza Dr., Schaumburg Rd./Old Navy/Target Corp./Quiznos Pizza/PepsiCo Incorporated building with parking garage nearby
