Lemont is a town in Kane County, Illinois, United States. The population was 7,827 at the 2010 census. It has a history dating back to 1847 when the first store in Lemont opened its doors. In 1865, two brothers founded the Lemont Agricultural and Manufacturing Company which manufactured farm tools and implements. The company was bought by H.J. Heinz in 1889 and became one of America's largest food processors before folding in 1907. In 1911, Lemont was incorporated as a city with a population of 20,000 people; however, it struggled during World War I due to low production quotas from the government and lack of war-related industry within thecity limits. After the war ended in 1918, business began to improve thanks to an influx of Italian immigrants who had come to work on farms in Lemont and nearby towns such as Peru City. This increase in manufacturing caused demand for goods made abroad to decrease (a trend that would continue until after World War II). In 1927, Lemont employed its first female police officer – Alice Bogan – giving her experience and training that she would use later when she joined the Kane County Sheriff's Department as an officer full time in 1951. During World War II, much of what is now downtown Lemont was built as part of Project Demolition: A massive demolition project undertaken by Army engineers under orders from General Dwight D Eisenhower following Japan's attack on Pearl Harbor on December 7th 1941; this included demolishing enemy military installations throughout central Kane County including many homes and businesses located near where present day First National Bank building stands today (the original bank being destroyed during WWII). Many residences were demolished outright or converted into barracks or other housing units while others were carefully dismantled piecemeal over several months leading up to their destruction so that they could be rebuilt using local materials post-war; these buildings still stand today example of post-rieg construction methods used in Kane County at that time The town center was completely demolished during Project Demolition leaving only brick walls surrounding what is now parkland behind it - this configuration continued until 1946 when rockfill was laid down overtop of the brick walls providing more stability for future development . The three men built a log cabin near the present-day intersection of Lemont Avenue and North Western Avenue to start a new town after being driven out of their previous village by Indians in 1868. Lemont became known as an agricultural center due to its large cornfields and other agricultural products produced there such as eggs, milk, butter, cheese, wheat flour, etc., until the early 21st century when many manufacturing businesses moved away from Lemont because of its lack of economic opportunities outside of healthcare and food service sectors which remain the town's main sources of revenue today. The current name for Lemont was given to it by Drury Lumber Company president James Haddon Clarke in honor of his son-in-law John A. Earhart who flew across America several times as an observer with aviator Wiley Post during World War I; posthumously receiving the nickname "the last American." In 1923 Clarke donated land east of Lemont Boulevard on what is now State Street to be used for public schools and also established a park named in his honor that still remains today within the boundaries of the city limits north of State Street (the old boundaries between Lemont Township and Cook County). LemONT ISLAND - According to one source this island may have been formed when two branches from Elm Creek converged near where state Streets intersect today... or else it may simply be another term for "Lemo" (a corruption or misspelling thereof). One theory suggests that Early settlers named their island after some kind local landmark like an eagle's eye view looking out over their crops - just like how our own hometowns are named! A post office was established here in 1839, and by 1850 there were 10 residents living in Lemont proper and 2 resident aliens. The first store opened here in 1849 as The Store of Mr. Crampton & Co., located on State Street between Prairie Road and Market Place In 1860 an act was passed authorising a day school for elementary students at 4:00 p.m., which became known as “Lemont” Public School In 1865 an act providing for a public road connecting Lemont with Greenfield (now Urbana) passed both houses of the state legislature with only one dissenting vote; this made it possible for people living near Greenfield to go shopping there instead of having to go all the way to Urbana or Chicago . After years of debate over whether or not to build a canal through town center due to its potential importance as a transportation artery (the village had been without water until 1881), voters approved $5,000 towards construction Projects began shortly after - including work on Water Street Bridge which resulted in much local opposition but ultimately led to increased traffic volumes that necessitated new streetcars being brought into service
