Lemont is a city in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 61,798 at the 2000 census. It is the sixth-largest city in Illinois and the third-largest city in Chicago. The area now known as Lemont was first settled by Germans in 1836. In 1847, the town was renamed for General James K. Polk, who had won the Ulysses S. Grant–1846 Ulysses S. Grant presidential election by running as an American Civil War general without any political or military experience. Lemont has been home to a variety of firearms manufacturing businesses since its incorporation as a village in 1856. At that time there were only five gunsmiths in Lemont overall and all of these were located elsewhere within Cook County proper (in Skokie and North Aurora). In 1870-1871, there were five stores that sell Firearms: “Hermes” (owned by Hiram Hermes), “Lafayette” (owned by Lafayette Lafitte), “Plymouth” (owned by Plymouth Whipple), “Underhill” (owned by Underhill & Sons) and “Wadsworth” (owned by Wadsworth & Sons). Then in 1881-1882 there were six stores that sell Firearms: “Becker’s Gun Shop” (operated from Becker House on North First Street), Jefferson National Bank building on State Street between Washington and Adams Streets (now the UI Carbondale campus), Provident Life Building on West Congress Street between Adams and Dearborn Streets (now part of the UI Carbondale campus), Masonic Temple Novena Building on West Randolph Street between Dearborn and Erie Streets (now part of the UI Carbondale campus) as well as two unnamed locations inside of the city limits which are now unknown

Despite this issueatics bombing during911 attacks on civil liberties protests occurred throughout downtown Lemontoitn which led some residents to form self-defense militias against future bombings or potential terror threats from abroad-.
