Lemont, Illinois is a town located in Lemont County, Illinois, United States. The population was 3,848 at the 2010 census. It lies on the border of Streator and Aurora Township. According to the 2010 census, Lemont has a total area of 362.2 square miles (1,041.3 km²). The Town of Lemont was organized on February 14, 1837 from parts of Aurora Township and Streator Township. On November 8, 1865 the townships were combined into one body and renamed Lemont township. On December 15, 1870 it lost its charter as a township but regained it on November 1st 1871 when part of Aurora Township became part of Lemont village. The first post office in Lemont was established on April 17th 1830 by Jno Prentice with John Atherton as his cashier. In 1833 there were only four homes in town and by 1860 there were over 200 residents living in what is now town limits

Lemont is a city in, and the county seat of Lemont Township, in DuPage County, Illinois, United States. The population was 51,711 at the 2010 census. It is the 9th most populous city in Illinois. The name "Lemont" is derived from a French fort built by General Jean-Baptiste de laSalle on the present site of Lemont in 1762. The first human settlement in what is now Lemont dates back to 1809 when French traders established a fur trading post near what is now the intersection of US highways 6 and 16. In 1814–1815, James K. Polk marched his army through this area during the American Civil War and took possession of part of modern Lemont which then lay within Confederate Indiana Territory. This site became part of Union-occupied Chicago following the war and was incorporated as a town in 1868 under order of Governor John Pecanner with Wm Hurlbut as its first mayor In 1899 two brothers founded Jardine Rubber Company here after discovering rubber trees growing wild along their family's property east of downtown Chicago. With access to good shipping channels and cheap labor from Canada through shipyards across America, Jardine became one of North America's leading rubber companies during World War I with plants located all over Great Britain (the Manchester factory being particularly importance). After hostilities ended Jardine went into receivership but rebounded during World War II with plant construction both at home (Jardine Refining Company) and abroad (Jardine Rubber Works Ltd., Dutch company). After 1945 Jardine decided against continuing production due to increasing competition from polypropylene products made overseas) until it finally ceased operations on October 15th 1957 Although once an important transportation hub for goods moving between points west and east coast of North America, rail travel has gradually become less necessary as trucking has become more prevalent; however a few passenger trains still run between Chicago-Lemont Amtrak station and South Bend/Mishawaka IL each day . There are also several buses that serve LEMONT every day including tworoute that connect LEMONT with Downers Grove IL: A route goes northbound via State Street to Hoyt Road stop then heads southbound on Hoyt Road past Sabrina High School before terminating at Maple Leaf Mall; another route goes eastbound via Main Street past Goodyear Elementary School then turns northeast onto Irving Park Rd for its final destination; there are also several small walking trails located throughout LEMONT that offer attractive views unobstructed by cars or people

The town was founded in 1871 by John A. Lemont and named for him. The first store was built on the site of present-day Lemont Elementary School in 1872 and the first school building was erected in 1876. In 1902, Lemont had its own post office and telephone system. The town's first election took place on November 3, 1902. Lemont is located at (41°15′04″N 90°48′38″W). According to the 2010 census, it has a total area of , of which (or 99%) is land and (or 1%) is water. As of the census of 2000, there were 4,917 people,[2] 3,878 households,[3] 2,711 families[4] and 1,521 individuals residing in the village proper.[5] As of the census[6] of 2008,[7] there are 5,, 658 households,[8][9][10][11][12][13] 527 families[14], 413 individuals (−1% from 2009), 313 housing units (+0% from 2009) and 156 businesses (of which one family operated five businesses) within Village limits; but no Village Council or public meeting could be found on file with village officials as per their website
