The name originated from an Indian word meaning "a place where two rivers meet." The first settler in what is now Lemont was Amos Kendall in 1824. A post office called Lemont was established in 1827. In 1830, a school for African American children was built on State Street. By 1840, there were three stores and twelve homes in the community. The first black person to be born in Lemont was Abraham Lincoln's slave John Fenton who arrived on October 12th, 1841. In 1865, James Trenholm founded the Griggs grocery store at 309 Elmira Road which became one of the most popular groceries around during that time period because it offered fresh produce as well as items like meat and milk without having to go through retail channels like grocery stores or selling directly to consumers like other big box grocers did then In 1907-1908 local businessmen Harry Lantz and Edward Crouse developed an ice cream business at 514 Main Street which became one of the most famous businesses around that time period due to its quality and variety
