Lemont was founded in 1849 as a small town on the banks of the Des Plaines River. The site of Lemont today is home to over seventy-five acres of agricultural land and four schools, making it one of the most agriculturally diverse communities in Illinois. The town's proximity to Chicago made it an important center for gun manufacturing and trade, and its location on the border between Cook County and Kane County make it a major point of entry for firearms into both counties.Gun locks are one of Lemont's most recognizable features, first appearing in 1851 when two brothers began producing a lock designed to attach pistols to guns used by frontier farmers. Lemont, Illinois is a city in the Chicago metropolitan area and is one of the most populous cities in Illinois. The city was founded on November 1, 1836 by Alexander K. Lemont and his wife Ann. It grew rapidly during the 1840s due to its location on the Des Plaines River, until it lost its status as a town in 1854 when it became part of the newly formed city of Chicago. In 1955, Lemont became an independent municipality with a mayor-council form of government. The population was estimated at 104,828 as of 2017. The history of Lemont goes back to 1836 when Alexander K. Lemont and his wife Ann moved from Ohio to what is now known as Lemont Township in Kane County, Illinois after purchasing land from John Davenport for $2,000 dollars. They built a log cabin that served as their home until they moved into their current house on North Fourth Street near State Avenue on October 1, 1841. It was here that Alex first met his future wife Ann who he married on December 14th that year. In 1844, Alex purchased 5 acres (20 hectares) east of present day downtown Lemont from Nicholas Doherty for $100 dollars which he used as pastureland for his horses and cows until he could build a home there himself some time later. He also started growing corn and beans which were brought over by wagonloads from Peoria downriver every fall because there wasn’t enough water to grow crops out west yet! In 1850 Alex sold his property west of downtown to Amos Prentice for $1 dollar per acre! This allowed him additional farmland east of downtown where he began growing apples trees and other vegetables! By 1865 Alex had increased his farm size to 10 acres (40 hectares). He also started raising chickens which soon became very popular in our community because they were simple to keep clean but produced large eggs that did well against other breeds! At this point you can see how important agriculture was during those early days – not only did businesses like Mr. Prentice provide food for many people but also farming allowed local families more space so they could raise their own children without having them move away too frequently! In 1857 Mr. Prentice donated 4 acres (16 hectares) next door to his own farm towards the endowment building for what would become Northwestern University! That same year another family donated 2 more acres (8 hectares) total towards what would become Lombard Elementary School!! These donations set off quite an uproar among some citizens because they didn’t think Northwestern should have been able to get such generous land donations just because it wanted school buildings etc… But overall these types of donations helped make Northwestern one of America’s leading universities!!! And we can thank them all especially Alex K., Amos Prentice and Nicholas Doherty who put their hearts into making Northwestern something great again by donating land & money!! All these people made possible Northwestern University which today has an enrollment exceeding 300K students!!!!! Thanks everyone!!!!!!!!!

Lemont is a town in Kane County, Illinois, United States. The population was 6,890 at the 2010 census. Lemont was founded in 1848 and named for Colonel Amos H. Lemont of the 7th U.S. Infantry Regiment who fought in the Mexican–American War. It was platted on March 10, 1849, by George J. Dawes with land that he had bought from prominent local citizens Isaac Asbury and Solomon Northrup. The first post office was opened in Lemont on April 4, 1850; it closed on December 12, 1893 due to its distance from other towns in Kane County and because of the Panic of 1893 which caused many farmers to sell their farms and leave the community. Lemont has been home to a number of famous people including composer Jerome Kern and basketball player Julius Erving who both attended Lemont High School there before going on to play professional basketball for Green Bay Packers (1961-1966), Philadelphia 76ers (1967-1975), Milwaukee Bucks (1976-1982) and Boston Celtics (1983-1989). In addition to its history as a small town located in central Kane County, Lemont is also known for its annual harvest festival which takes place during early October each year and features traditional American farm foods such as tomatoes, applesauce, cornbread dressing etc., as well as handmade crafts including quilts or pie crusts presented by local businesses during the evening event preceding pumpkin picking time at nearby Mount Zion Park ().
