The oldest buildings still standing are those dating back to 1836, when Lemont was first settled by farmers who arrived from eastern Ohio with their families for land grants that were part of the Northwest Territory after the American Civil War. In 1860, three years after Illinois became a state, Lemont had 1,000 residents and included parts of what is now Downers Grove, Addison Township (northwest of Lemont), Romeoville (southwest of Lemont), Cicero (southeast of Lemont), Elmhurst (southwest of Romeoville), Northbrook (northeast of Cicero), Mount Prospect (northwest of Elmhurst), Ottawa (southeast corner of Ottawa and Mount Prospect Streets),and Westchester Heights (southwest corner Ottawa Street and west edge Maple Avenue). By 1870 there were 4 settlements: Albion(northwestern corner Ottawa Street north to State Line Road; 400 residents) Belvidere(east side Maple Avenue south to Ontario Highway) Bridgeport( southeast corner Main Street east to Canadian Pacific Railway Tracks) Crystal Lake( northwest corner Main Street north to US-59/I-94 junction) Douglas Park( northeast corner Main Street south to I-294 junction). Of these five original settlements only Albion survived into the 21st century - it is now part of Clearlake Village - while Belvidere was destroyed by fire in 1902; Bridgeport disbanded because most people moved away during World War II; Crystal Lake disappeared into disrepair following a flood in 1957; Douglas Park disappeared when businesses closed down around 1960; And Ottawa went through several name changes before settling on its current name: LemONT City Limits Incorporated on October 2nd 2003 local time

In 1892, Lemont opened its first electric streetcars which allowed for faster travel between downtown Chicago and the villages around it. By 1907, all bus service within the city had been discontinued and Lemont developed into a commuter town with buses running only during rush hours; this changed with the opening of the Elgin Street Railway in 1916 which connected downtown withElgin Park (now Wicker Park).

Lemont was a small community of around 100 residents at the time of its founding. It soon became larger, with a population of over 500 when it merged with neighboring towns Park Ridge and Arlington in 1876. In 1916, Lemont became a city.
