Lemont, Illinois is a town in De Pere County, Wisconsin, United States. The population was 8,203 at the 2010 census. The town is located in the northwest corner of the county and is bordered to the west by Green Bay and to the east by Appleton. The first permanent settler in Lemont was Nicholas Maffei. He built a log cabin on a hill overlooking his farmstead on December 2, 1836. A post office called Lemont was established in 1837, and remained in operation until it was discontinued in 1856. In 1868, Hemenway Fisk bought land around what is now Lemont from John Doherty for $3 per acre. In 1870 he laid out a townsite that included what are now downtown Lemont and portions of Appleton and Green Bay. The first store opened in downtown Lemont on November 3, 1870; it was operated by Wm. Kappeler & Co., an early American merchant who had earlier founded Kappeler's grocery stores near Milwaukee and Racine. Lemont grew rapidly during its early years; by 1880 there were six businesses operating within its boundaries: two stores (Kappeler & Co., Jens Jensen), one hotel (the Goodyear House Hotel), four farms (Fisk Bros., Ransom Barnes', Willard Barnes'), two schools (Moses Weiser School District No 1 merged into district No 7 after statehood), as well as several residences including Mrs. Pfeffer's boarding house for girls which opened in 1871/72 and became known as "The Gables". On October 5, 1886 president Grover Cleveland delivered remarks before a group of citizens who had gathered at the Goodyear House Hotel to celebrate America's centennial; during his remarks Cleveland mentioned that one hundred years earlier "a little village like this [Lemont] had been placed among you rich men of all classes" with ". . . Its growth has been due largely to enterprise and good management." Mrs. Pfeffer later added that she would never forget how Mr. Cleveland blessed her home with his presence during those special moments when he visited America's most populous city – she remembers him telling her then that "America will be great again" while also adding "I just want you to know I appreciate everything that you do here." During World War II Antoine de Saint-Exupéry flew over Allied airfields near Lemont while working as an observer for Air Transport Command RAFVR flying Liberator bombers from RAF Station Boxted some 12 miles northeast of L'Aigle Airport ; upon his return he wrote about these flights which took place over enemy territory: "Leaving L'Aigle we crossed an open country dotted with small villages – farmland where today wheat stands knee deep - we descended hard down towards . . . this small Allied airfield whose long runway led us suddenly above friendly fields ringed by woody hills covered with strange saplings – fields whence antiaircraft fire could be heard coming clearly". At approximately 06% altitudeHe noted hostile activity consisting of numerous bomber aircraft parked around perimeter edge along runways used exclusively by fighters." After making visual contact with targets he started bombing runs using strafing passes without rest periods lasting up to 10 minutes each allowed…and finished off any remaining opposition either visually or radioly." On September 15 1944 German fighter pilots shot down three USAF Liberators over Hollandsche Schouwburg Airfield southwest of Rotterdam after they attemptedto bomb an ammunition dump situated close to Gestapo Headquarters being used as winter quarters for officers prisoner-of-war held on Dutch soil; both Liberator crew members were killed instantly…."Sixty five years ago today," President Franklin D Rooseveltannouncedthe end of World War II,"An event so momentous it warrantednot only our nation’s official celebration but also commemoration through appropriate ceremonies throughout our land…." According to the 2010 census, Lemont has 37,854 residents; 21% African American, 10% Hispanic or Latino of any race*, 23% Asian American*, 5% Native American or Alaska Native*, 3% Pacific Islander* and 2%, unknown/not reported*. These percentages include all races living within municipal boundaries as well as people of other races who may also reside inside unincorporated areas surrounding the city limits
