The name Lemont may come from the French word "l'embouchure" meaning "the bend". The first settler in what would become Lemont was James Wikeman and his family who came to the area in 1836. In 1847, John Prentice founded a gristmill on current-day Park Street and named it after himself. A post office called Wikeman had been established in 1835 by David Hendrickson. In 1857, J.M. Goodyear opened a store near present-day Elmwood Avenue andcalled it Goodyear's Store & Antique Shop. A post office called Prentice was established at this location in 1870 by Amos Phelps with the same name as Goodyear's Store & Antique Shop. In 1872, Gurney Halleck bought land northwest of Park Street from Amos Phelps for $1,000 and erected a farmhouse there which he named Halleck House (now demolished). He later donated this property to Lemont Township when he died in 1893 A small sawmill operated by Nicholas Lunsford located on current day Elmwood Avenue began operations around 1840 and continued until 1915 when it became an automatic gristmill automated by Proctor Manufacturing Company of Urbana IL . The mill also produced flour for local bakery products such as donuts before it closed down . An early resident of Lemont was George Bowers who arrived there from Kankakee County in 1838 He married Sarah Thomson whom he met while working for her father on his farm northeast of Park Street . They raised six children here before moving away to Racine where George worked for four years as a forester before becoming an opera singer Thereafter they moved back to Kankakee County and marry again two times each before retiring here permanently . Mrs Bowers is buried next to her husband at Evergreen Cemetery . . After World War II many farmers left agriculture due to technology advancements however many new families continued farming here into the 1970s thanks to cheap farmland prices
