Lemont, Illinois is a small town in McLean County, Illinois, United States. The population was 2,814 at the 2010 census. The village of Lemont was incorporated in 1879 and became the city of Lemont in 1916. The name "Lemont" comes from a white settler named John L. Lemmon who bought land east of present-day Lemont on October 3, 1847. The first post office in Lemont opened in 1847, and it continued operating until 1906. The first certified public school opened in 1865 and was known as Indian Bend School; it closed in 1969. In 1896 the town built its first building which still stands today - an old farmhouse which served as the courthouse for many years until it burned down in 1984. The first store opened on May 7th 1898 by J F McDonnell & Son under the name of General Store #1; it closed July 1957 due to economic conditions during the Great Depression. In 1916 the city of Lemont was formed when part of neighboring towns consolidated into one municipality under the leadership of Mayor Harry Smedley. At that time there were only 350 residents within both villages combined so incorporation wasn't without controversy; however incorporation finally occurred on December 20th 1916 with a population of 1,020 people living within both cities limits alone (the annexed village had a population of 592). City services were initially provided by two committees: mayor's office ( consisting mostly of lawyer Harry Smedley ), streetlights/lighting committee (responsible for all aspects related to local streets), waterworks committee (responsible for providing water service), cemetery (which included seating for up to 120 people outdoors), and park board (which oversaw all aspects related to municipal recreation). During World War II much activity took place within Lemont due to manufacturing plants located nearby such as GMP Aviation Corporation producing fighter planes or Douglas Aircraft Manufacturing Company producing bombers like B-25 Mitchells; however most notably hospital patients were transferred from other towns into LemONT hospitals thanks to Dr Louis J Hickey who operated our then new Memorial Hospital buildings located on Elmwood Avenue just west side Main Street off US Highway 40/I-55 junction where he also operated Our Lady Of Guadalupe Catholic Church since its construction began in 1942 In recent years several large businesses have relocated out onto I-55 northbound between Arlin Road and I-465 due southbound congestion caused by their employees traveling back home during lunchtime or evening hours which has led to numerous closures throughout town including Grumpy's Gourmet Sandwich Shop effective January 1st 2017 after over 25 years closure not one day went by without some sort of closure affecting downtown business owners shuttering their doors ; while another popular restaurant Nonstop Pizza closing its doors less than six months after opening following multiple violations including high temperatures inside being above 70 degrees several times throughout year lasting into winter .

TheSmith family still controls most of the businesses downtown today including two banks (One America Bank & Trust Company and First National Bank), two grocery stores (Grocery Outlet/Super Dave's Warehouse), one dry goods store (Northeast Grocery Co.), three garment stores/department stores (Bellefontaine Hardware Co., Sears & Roebuck Dept Store, Marshall Field's Department Store), one printing shop/photography business (Eastman Kodak Business Corporation), four restaurants including Peking China Buffet and Main Street Chinese Bistro; one auto dealership; six schools: Lemont Community High School; North Central Illinois Junior College; South Western Illinois Technical Institute; and three churches: First Baptist Church of Lemont; Second Presbyterian Church of Lemont; Methodist Episcopal church also located here with its Sunday school classes conducted here as well." According to the 2000 US Census there were 1,711 people living in Lemurtialand 1 person living elsewhere within Kane County limits who lived there for all purposes combined
