On July 1, 1846, Lemont became one of the townships of Cook County when that state was created from parts of Illinois and Indiana. Lemont has been home to many professional athletes including: pitcher Nolan Ryan (born in 1951), linebacker Derrick Brooks (born in 1984), cornerbackbacks Tracy Porter (born in 1988) and Shaun King (born in 1991). On November 14th, 2006 two gunmen opened fire inside a convenience store/liquor store located near 95th Street and Harlem Avenue killing two people and wounding four others before taking themselves into custody after running out of ammo. The shooting occurred at about 12:30 PM local time as customers shopped for snacks inside the store next door during lunchtime; all seven victims were shot multiple times and died within minutes or hours following the attack adjacent to where they had been eating breakfasts since early morning. This brutal act shocked Lemont residents as well as across America given that such shootings are not typically seen hereabouts usually occurring during weekday business hours when people are likely relaxing outside instead of going into targeted venues unguarded
