In 1824, the store was moved to its current location and became one of the first businesses in Lemont to begin selling ammunition online. Ammunition sales continued until 1959 when the store closed its doors for good. Today, the old ammunition store building still stands and is used as a storage facility for local businesses. Lemont, Illinois is a town in DuPage County, Illinois, about 15 miles east of Chicago. The population was 26,811 at the 2010 census. Lemont has been called "the most beautiful small town in America" and one of the " fastest-growing towns in Illinois." The first settlement in what is now Lemont was made by farmers who came to the area from Allentown, Pennsylvania in 1814. By 1825, there were six families living in what is now Lemont. The community name originated with John Prentice's grocery store on State Street. A post office called Lemont was established in 1827, and remained open until it was discontinued in 1865. In 1839, Lemont became part of the new county of Du Page and was incorporated as a village. The first mayor of Lemont was George M. Smith. In 1861, the village merged with the township and became an organized town under the governance of a board of trustees which included seven citizens from each township ward or precinct. On July 1, 1871 – just two years after Abraham Lincoln's election as President – Lemont incorporation resulted from a referendum held by residents within its original boundaries (now part of Brownstown Township). At that time there were 24 villages and townships within Du Page County; however only five (Lemunt being one) voted to become incorporated municipalities under state law; these were Bloomington (1872), Jacksonville (1873), Carbondale (1877), Aurora (1879),andNormal (1887). The following year saw another referendum on incorporation resulting in Lisle becoming an independent municipality separate from Lemont; this vote also passed with majorities for incorporation across all but two precincts within Lisle Township limits which had then reverted back toDu Page County jurisdiction since Bloomington no longer qualified as an incorporated municipality due to having absorbed parts of Aurora Township). As communities annexed other adjacent townships over time some areas located within present day Brownstown Township including Lisle proper annexed more than once before finally returning to DuPage County jurisdiction when Lisle itself disbanded following its own incorporation petition process several years later Some residents have argued that consolidation may have been beneficial for local economies as it allowed these larger villages/townships more control over their own finances and development decisions while still granting them autonomy throughboards overseeing municipal affairs although this assertion cannot be confirmed definitively . In any case - consolidation wasn't universally welcomed among locals & appears not have led directly to increase taxation or services rendered by individual villages/townships despite claims otherwise
