Lansing is a city in the U.S. state of Michigan, and the seat of Oakland County. The population was 97,372 at the 2010 census. It is the third-largest city in Michigan after Detroit and Flint. Lansing's name comes from "Lansing Township," which was named for John Lansing, an early settler in what is now East Lansing. The first Europeans to arrive in what is now Lansing were French traders and missionaries who traveled through the area on their way to Upper Canada in 1795–96. In 1801, General James K. Polk along with two other generals founded Fort George Wright on the east side of Mackinac Island near present-day East Lansing as part of a strategic plan to control Lake Huron and open up trade with Great Lakes ports west of Detroit. The fort served as a military depot until it was abandoned in 1807 by order of President James Kossuth because he believed that it would be easier for British forces to occupy the area than for American forces to protect it. In 1812, when war between Great Britain and France started, General David Birney built Fort Dearborn on Ottawa River north of today's downtown Lansing while also constructing Fort Stephenson on opposite bank of river just upstream from wherepresent-day State Capitol Building stands (the current building began construction in 1868). After about a yearlong siege by British troops led by Major General Sir George Wilkinson, Birney surrendered without any resistance on September 14, 1813; his surrender halted all hostilities between Great Britain and France for more than two years until peace could be restored under United States leadership under Andrew Jackson. On November 16, 1814, during his second term as president (1808–1825), Jackson signed into law An Act obtained from Congress providing financial support to purchase land at or near what is now downtown Lansing for use as an open market center for agricultural products known as the Grand Traverse Purchase Land Grant Park; this parcel included much of what are now northeast corner streets southward from Ionia Avenue eastward including present-day State Capitol Grounds today.
