Lansing is a city in the St. Clair County, Illinois, United States. It is the seat of St. Clair County government and one of its five municipalities. The population was 37,521 as of the 2010 census[1] and was estimated to be 41,814 by 2016.[2] Lansing is part of the Chicago–Naperville–Prairie View–Rockford Metropolitan Area. Lansing was first settled in 1809 by men from Michigan Territory who were looking for a new home after being displaced by the Battle of Black Hawk Creek. The town was named for James Kempton Lansing, an early settler and manufacturer in what is now Lansing Township on the east side of Lake Michigan. In 1818, John Sivert built a sawmill at present-day East Lansing on Negaunee River which became one of the first commercial mills in Cass county. In 1824, Lansing's first courthouse was built on Woodrow Wilson Boulevard near downtown; it served as the county seat until 1839 when it moved to Detroit (then known as Mackinac City). In 1840, when Illinois become a state, Lansing became part of Washtenaw County and continued to serve as its county seat until it removed to Detroit in 1932. In 1856, during the American Civil War, General George Armstrong Custer fought his way through central Michigan into Upper Canada before being stopped at Fort Gratiot just north of here by Major General Ulysses S Grant’s forces under General Philip Sheridan; Custer’s troops burned all but three miles (6 kilometers) of their route northward before finally surrendering two days later at Yorktown Heights near today’s Dearborn Heights neighborhood on Long Island Sound—the last major American military engagement in what would come to be known as America’s Civil War era.[3][4] As a result of this battle and other engagements along these lines around here over ensuing years,[5][6][7], most people consider this area now bounded by I-94/I-696/US Highway 11 eastbound betweenEast Lansing Street (just south of today's Midtown neighborhood) and US Highway 23 westbound between Lapeer Road and Northfield Road,[8] just east off I-94/I-696/US Highway 11 across from East Greenbush Avenue—to have been within Indian Country up until about that time due primarily to land cessions following Treaty Of Paris ending hostilities in 1865 followed thereafter by white settlement thereabouts increasingly regardless thereof including some formal sovereignty claims thereto ever since then notwithstanding any more or less formal recognition thereof either official or unofficial both currently pending final disposition therein whatever thereby still remaindering hereby forever so situated without formally changing any such status quo whatsoever save insofar as actual physical boundaries thenceforward specific occupants oroccupants rather than prior Official Boundaries herein aforesaid remain essentially unchanged thereby thereby Heller Place continuing undisturbed hereby always Heller Place name never changed despite changes throughout entire twentieth century mapmakers depiction therein variously rendered continually variously redrawn consecutively every once in awhile real estate developers ever since then incidentally seeking out different names whenever possible each time resulting eventually Heller Place name reinstated ultimately
