Lansing was established as a trading post on the Kankakee River by fur traders from what is now Montreal in 1812. In 1834 it became the capital of Michigan Territory and was renamed Lansing after George Washington's birthplace townsite on York Road (now Washington Boulevard). The first mayor of Lansing was John Wirt, who served from 1840 to 1846. In 1851 Lansing became a state capital when Michigan joined the Union; it retained its status as a capital until 1905. Lansing had an important role during World War II as a bomber base for aircraft manufacturing operations at Belle Isle Naval Air Station and other military sites throughout central Illinois. In recent years it has been home to some high-tech companies such as Microsoft and Intel Xeon processor products manufacturing plants which have attracted heavy investment by residents and businesses alike since they are located close to many transportation options including I-94 exit 9 southbound off US 34W/I-235 eastbound near downtown Lansing According to The Great Lakes Index report released in 2018, "The rank of cities with highest median household incomes went up slightly between 2016 and 2017 but increased marginally overall (from No. 4th to No. 5th)." This indicates that although there has been some growth for smaller cities within IL over this time period, larger urban areas have seen an increase in their income levels - something that Lansing may experience more frequently going forward given its small size relative to other large American cities

Lansing, Illinois is a town in the northwest corner of the state of Illinois. It is bordered to the east by Ottawa County and to the west by Wayne County. The population was 21,898 at the 2010 census. Lansing was founded on May 12, 1834, when General James K. Polk sent a brigade of United States Volunteers under Colonel Andrew J. Smith to take possession of what is now Lansing Township along with other townships in that area during the Territorial Period (1830-1863). In 1836, Lansing became part of St. Louis County and was renamed after its original capital city, Lansingburgh (now Albany), New York City. The first settler in present-day Lansing Township was John Cushing who arrived there sometime between 1792 and 1794 on a group of three boats from Boston led by his brother Caleb Cushing. He built what is now known as Old Three Mile House which he erected on land donated by his father Jonathan Cushing and others in 1804/05 for $7 per acre ($270 total). One reason for this early settlement may have been political instability caused by Indian raids into central Michigan Territory; already settlers were concerned about possible military retaliation should such raids occur elsewhere within their newly acquired territory. In 1830–31, General James Kipkoeffer's brigade under Colonel Andrew J. Smith invaded Upper Michigan Territory through what are now Ottawa and Wayne Counties and took control of much of what is now Lansing Township including parts of today's Arlington Heights neighborhood on February 22, 1830 (the date still remembered as Michigan Statehood Day). At that time only one house had been built in present day Lansing Township: "Old Three Mile House" which served as headquarters for Captain John Neely's Company Fractional Dragoons during this invasion campaign although it wasn't actually Constructed until later that year following similar construction efforts across most or all territorial settlements during this period around these areas including many villages etc.). After taking control of much NW Michigan Territory including present day Lansing Township General James Kipperkoefer ordered forces back home sick or absent from action leaving behind manyqvtd houses & lots unoccupied w/ few if any occupants due to fact most residents either left shortly after occupation or returned home soon afterwards fearing repercussions from both sides - some settlers simply abandoned everything they owned & moved away wholeheartedly while others intentionally avoided military encounters out of fear reprisal could follow not just against themselves but also friends & family back home – ironically some years later violence erupted between native Americans & Ulysses S Grant's army over mining rights near Redford LandingREDACTED
