Lansing, Illinois is a city in the U.S. state of Michigan and the county seat of Wayne County. The population was 1,865 at the 2010 census. It is the most populous city in Wayne County and one of the largest cities in Michigan. The first European settlers to Lansing were French traders who arrived during the 17th century. In 1803, General James Kieft established Fort Michilimackinac on Ottawa Island near present-day Lansing after his failed attempt to conquer Upper Canada from Great Britain. The fort was abandoned in 1805 when Kieft's army was destroyed by American forces under General Anthony Wayne. In 1827, Lansing became an independent village when it seceded from Detroit Township and joined with other villages in what would become Macomb County. In 1830, a new courthouse was built on Green Street and named for then-Judge John Everett Mifflin (1795–1867). The courthouse remained operational until 1898 when it was replaced by a more modern structure on Gratiot Avenue north of downtown. During World War II, Lansing served as headquarters for Third Army which controlled all of eastern Michigan including Toledo, Ohio; Buffalo, New York; and Grand Rapids, Michigan. During that time there were massive air raids on town center areas as part of Operation Crossroads which targeted strategic targets throughout North America together with Hiroshima and Nagasaki years later . After Victory in World War II came economic prosperity followed by suburbanization as people moving into large Cities such as Chicago or Detroit started to leave their rural homes behind . In recent years much progress has been made within Lansing through various initiatives like its comeback to prominence following decades long vacancy rates; efforts towards increasingy its arts scene; establishment of KeyArena basketball arena which will house both NHL hockey teams alongside other events such as auto shows etc

It likely originated with Native American traders who traveled along the Huron River before landing at Mackinac Island in 1699.[23]:167 In 1701, George Croghan became the first white settler in what is now Grand Traverse County when he purchased 2 acres (0.8 ha) near present-day downtown Lansing from Chief Joseph Chisholm for $550 ($2 per acre).[24]:137 By 1800, there were over 100 white settlers living in what is now metropolitan Wayne County when President George Washington visited this area during his raids against Indian traders east of Lake Erie on December 12, 1786.[25]:143 A group led by Captain John Snyder established a small town called Frenchtown on Shiawassee Creek about two miles westward from wherepresent day Main Street crossed Shiawassee Creek just northof present day Greenfield Road northeastof present day Saginaw Avenue southwestof present day East Middle School lies today within our limits
Lansing was first settled in 1837 by James Lansing, a Michigan land owner. The city was founded as a result of the "Lansing Act" which granted statehood to Michigan. The act also created the Michigan Territory, which included Lansing and portions of Upper Peninsula counties. Lansing became the capital of the territory on February 17, 1840. On October 15, 1847, the State of Illinois was founded and Lansing became its capital. On November 3, 1861, during the American Civil War, Lansing was located at Battle Creek when Union General Ulysses S. Grant attacked Fort Donelson in what is known as theBattle of Grand River (now Muskegon Heights). In 1865, Lansing became part of Indiana as part of the Compromise Of 1866 that ended Reconstruction in America. In 1875–76, Lansing hosted Republican National Convention from Green Bay. In 1903–04 he served as Mayor of Detroit after being elected by popular vote to that position over incumbent Dred Scott; however he resigned upon learning that his opponent had received financial contributions from Southern Democrats and their allies
