Lake Zurich was founded in 1824 by John F. Schuette, who named it for his friend and patron, the Count of Zurich. The first white settlers arrived in 1827 and the town developed slowly until 1830, when it became a village. A post office was established in 1831 and a school was built that year. In 1840, the party of General James K. Polk traveled through Illinois on their way to the White House and stopped at Fort Dearborn on their way to Chicago. The townspeople were so excited about this new development that they raised money to buy land adjacent to the fort for themselves. The first schoolhouse in Lake Zurich was built in 1845. After World War II, many businesses moved into Lake Zurich from other parts of Illinois or from Indiana because of its high quality of life and its proximity to Chicago.
