Lake Zurich was first settled by English farmers in 1836 as part of the "Plan for Agricultural Settlement" promoted by President Andrew Johnson and then-Secretaryof State James K. Polk. In 1857, when it became part of the newly formed DuPage County, Lake Zurich followed suit with its own name change to honor Representative Samuel J. Tilden (D-Chicago). The original town hall building burned down in 1906 but was rebuilt using funds raised through a bond issue that year. That same year saw also its biggest ever victory when 400 boys from North Side High School won their third consecutive school championship game against South Side High School 47-14 in an event now known as "The Game That Made America". Since its incorporation as a city in 1933, Lake Zurich has seen dramatic growth - from just over 2,500 residents in 1940 to over 10 thousand by 1990. Development has taken many forms including new housing developments such as Water Tower Village and Lakeshore Villas; office buildings such as One Washington Square; retail space such as Town Center Shopping Mall; amusement park attractions like Aquatics Parkway waterpark; and professional sports teams including the Blackhawks/Blackhawks (now called the Blackhawks), Bulls/Bulls (now called the Cubs), Twins/Twins (now called MLB's White Sox) and Racers (now known as NFL's Bears). Today, Lake Zurich is home to more than 100,000 people who make up one quarter of all Du Page county residents age 25 or younger who are employed full time or have started working since 2006 according to US Census data released last week.
