The City of Lake Zurich was founded on July 1, 1837 by Major John Prentice and James Gurney as part of a land grant from the government to James Kappes. At first it was called Kappesville because that is where Kappes lived until he moved to Elmhurst in 1846. In 1871, when Elgin Township was consolidated with Cook County, Kappesville became Lake Zurich and all other titles were dropped from its name--a rarity for cities in Cook County at that time. It has been reported that General George Armstrong Custer may have stayed at Naper's Hotel while staying in Elmhurst during his visit to Chicago after the United States victory over Mexico at Buena Vista Hill on November 6th 1865; however this claim cannot be confirmed without more information about Custer's stay in Elmhurst or later life.

Lake Zurich, Illinois is a city in the U.S. state of Illinois and the county seat of Cook County. The population was 60,594 at the 2010 census, making it the third-largest city in Cook County after Chicago and Springfield. Lake Zurich is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. It is bordered by LaGrange to the north, Northbrook to the east, Oak Park to the south, and Downers Grove to the west. The first permanent settlers in what is now Lake Zurich were farmers who arrived in 1818 from Kankakee Township, Indiana. The first schools in what would become Lake Zurich were founded in 1827-28 by Reverend Samuel Morse and Drs John Hennigan and James Casey as two separate schools operated out of a farmhouse on account of their being within one mile (1 km) of each other on a bend in Illini Creek near present day Burr Ridge Road. In 1831-32/33 Reverend Morse built an academy on land that he donated which served as school until 1840 when it burned down due to lightning strike; however Rev. Morse rebuilt it soon afterwards using some lumber from his old academy building which still stands today across from Union Catholic High School on South Front Street just south of I-88 exit 25A (the former Urbana Avenue). Today's high school was founded about 1930 as Stritch Catholic High School following merger with three other small high schools - Alverno Academy (Alverno IL), Our Lady Of Lourdes Catholic HS (Niles IL), Blessed Sacrament HS (Downers Grove IL). In 1838–39 Father Nicholas Janssen became pastor at Grace Church which would serve as both church and school until 1870 when he moved into his own house on State Street ceased services there permanently due to financial problems Related: History Of La Grange
Lake Zurich was originally known as the Great Lakes watershed. The name comes from the Huron word "zucchini," meaning "flat, level land." The first Europeans to visit the area were the French in 1724 and they named it La Prairie de la Hoche (Hoche's Prairie). In 1814, a surveyor named John Bigelow discovered a large body of water on the east side of present-day Lake Zurich. He called it Placidus Lake after his friend and patron, politician William Pitt. The original town of Geneva was founded on this site in 1828 by James Logan and others. After several years, Logan sold his land to John Pritzker, who built a mill there. In 1837, he constructed the first school in what is now Geneva. By 1840, about 150 people lived in Geneva. However, because of heavy industry along the Illinois canal system and an overall decline in agricultural production across all of Illinois due to railroad development and other factors, Geneva declined rapidly. By 1854, only 10 people lived in Geneva; by 1860, it had shrunk to 3 residents. However, because of its location near Chicago and its connection to other important waterways through rivers and canals such as the Fox River System (now part of Chicago), Geneva continued to be influential for many years afterwards.
