Lake Zurich is a 20,000 acre (8,600 hectare) body of water located in Kendall County, Illinois, United States. It forms the eastern border of the city of Chicago and is drained by the Chicago River. The lake has a shoreline that runs 1 mile (1.6 km) from its mouth to the southwest corner of Jackson Park, which includes most of downtown Chicago. The population was 116,540 at the 2010 census. The name "Lake Zurich" first appeared on maps in 1781 when James K. Polk's surveyor registered it as part of his map of Illinois. The town was organized on May 25, 1848, by General John Molineux with 256 residents. On July 5th that year Molineux sold Lake Zurich to Joseph Edwards for $2,500 cash and six hundred acres (240 hectares). Edwards donated two-thirds of his land to the town for use as a public parkland and one-third for agricultural use. After Edwards' death in 1862 his widow donated all remaining land to the village for development into an open space called "Edwards Park". The first house built in what is now Lake Zurich was erected by Abraham Lincoln on President Street in 1857 while he was governor of Illinois. When Chicago began annexing other towns east of Lake Michigan in 1871 Lake Zurich became part ofChicago along with seven other villages
