He started out as a farm boy and then worked his way up through the ranks of agriculture until he became president of Surenwood Farms in Rockford, Illinois in 1865. In 1868 he developed what would become Lake Zurich into an agricultural town by start building a dam on the north side of the river now known as White Marsh Creek. He also donated land to create what is now downtown Lake Zurich. In 1907, local businessmen built a new shopping center called Park Plaza which still stands today with its own movie theater and several businesses including Sears & Roebuck and JCPenney opened their stores there during that time period
Lake Zurich was founded in 1815 by Simon and David Quarles. In 1836, the city of Chicago was founded on the shores of the lake. The two cities merged in 1945.
