Lake Zurich is a city in the northwest corner of Illinois, United States. The population was 23,859 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Kane County. The name comes from the Kankakee Sioux word "Zucker" meaning "sweet water." The first Europeans to visit what is now Lake Zurich were French fur traders in 1674 and 1675. Jesuit missionaries, led by Father Jacques Marquette, explored the area in 1701 and reached what is now Chicago on their return journey. George Washington visited Lake Zurich on his way to Mount Rushmore in 1802. In 1815, General James Dearborn founded Dearborn Heights on land that he purchased from the Potawatomi Indians near present-day Geneva. In 1818, Dearborn Heights was annexed into Chicago as part of a boundary change that made Cook County more populous. Lake Zurich was incorporated as a city on December 15, 1871. At its incorporation it had a population of 2,252 people. The first mayor and first City Council were appointed by Mayor John Haggerty with Jeptha Purdy serving as First Vice President and Wanda Laughlin as Second Vice President; all three women held office until they resigned due to ill health in 1907 (Laughlin died soon after). On November 29th 1909 Zalmay Khalilzad became Mayor after an election which took place during World War I; he served for 6 years before being impeached by Governor Frank Lowden on March 12th 1921 for perjury amidst allegations of bribery and kickbacks received while he was Municipal Commissioner of Kane County (Khalild had been convicted earlier that year of embezzlement). Khalild's impeachment forced Lowden to appoint Harry Swayne as Mayor until completion of the term then running concurrently with Khalild's term ending two weeks later on April 3rd 1921 After this non-partisan mayoral race there was much internal conflict between factions within City Hall over who should succeed Khalild when his term expired Some members wanted Swayne because he had experience leading government agencies such as police and fire departments while others felt that an inexperienced young man like Khalild would be better suited for the job Finally due to increasing financial problems caused by World War I sales taxes being raised above necessary levels and high unemployment rates both Swayne and Khalild agreed to step down effective October 1st 1921 . This left Harry Davenport , one vote shy of becoming Mayor but with no power to make decisions or ask for help from any other body including City Council

The first Europeans to visit the area were French traders and missionaries in 1679. In 1814, General James K. Polk explored and surveyed Lake Zurich for his ill-fated Polk Expedition. In 1886, a large dam was constructed on the north side of the lake by United States Steel Company engineers in an effort to increase power production at their steel works on the south side of the lake.
